Document insights is the panel beside the editor canvas that turns the quality scan into something you can act on. It shows your page's live score, the breakdown by dimension, and a prioritized list of fixes — so improving a page is a matter of working down the list.
Opening the panel
The insights panel lives in the right side panel of the editor, alongside the table of contents. Open it any of these ways:
- Click the Quality badge in the page header.
- Press <kbd>Ctrl/⌘ Shift .</kbd> to toggle the side panel.
- Click the expand chevron on the right edge when the panel is collapsed.
The quality badge
In the page header, the Quality badge shows the overall score (0–100) inside a circular gauge, with a status word beneath it. The badge is color-coded by status:
| Status | Score |
|---|---|
| **Excellent** | 88–100 |
| **Good** | 75–87 |
| **Fair** | 60–74 |
| **Needs work** | 0–59 |
The score updates automatically as you edit — there's no "scan now" button to press.
The dimension breakdown
Inside the panel, the overall score is broken into the five scored dimensions, each with its own score and findings:
- Readability — sentence length, reading level, clarity, voice.
- Structure — heading hierarchy, flow, section length, block usage.
- SEO — title, description, keywords, metadata.
- Accessibility — alt text and semantic structure.
- Completeness — coverage, examples, missing sections.
See Scan with AI for how the dimensions are weighted into the overall score.
Prioritized findings
Each dimension lists specific findings, ordered by how much fixing them will raise the score. A finding tells you exactly what's wrong and where — for example "Heading levels skip from H2 to H4" or "An image is missing alt text" — so you're never left guessing what "improve readability" means.
Fixing from the panel
The fastest path from a low score to a high one:
They're the highest-impact issues on the page.
Click Improve with AI in the page header to fix everything, or use its caret to target one dimension — Readability, Structure, SEO, Accessibility, or Completeness. See Improve with AI.
Watch the badge and dimension scores climb as the page is rewritten.
Insights vs. Scan with AI
These are two views of the same underlying analysis:
- Scan with AI is the engine — it produces the score and findings.
- Document insights is the surface — it presents that analysis live in the editor for the current page.
For project-wide quality across many pages at once, use the Docs Health board instead.
