The Workspace Assistant is a chat interface that understands everything in your workspace — every project, space, page, and setting you have access to. Instead of clicking through the UI to find a page or remember how a feature works, you ask. It's the author-side counterpart to the reader-facing site assistant.
Opening the assistant
Open the Workspace Assistant at /assistant from the app sidebar. The composer's placeholder hints at what it's for: "Ask for a rewrite, draft, content audit, release note polish, or IA proposal…"
What you can ask
The assistant is grounded in your workspace content and built for documentation work specifically:
Find and summarize
- "Where do we document the rate limits for the search API?"
- "Summarize the Billing space in three bullet points."
- "Which pages haven't been updated in the last six months?"
Draft and polish
- "Draft a quickstart page for the new webhooks feature."
- "Polish these release notes for the 2.1 launch."
- "Write an FAQ section from the support questions in the Help Center."
Audit and propose structure
- "Run a content audit on the Getting Started space and list the gaps."
- "Propose an improved information architecture for the API Reference."
Grounding and citations
The assistant grounds its answers in the pages, spaces, and projects in your workspace. The Context used panel shows which content informed each answer, so you can verify it and click through to the source. If it doesn't have enough information, it says so rather than guessing.
It's agentic
The Workspace Assistant uses tools to accomplish tasks rather than only generating text — it searches content, reads pages, and drafts. You'll see it work through the steps it takes, so its reasoning is transparent.
What's tracked
Each turn records its token usage — prompt tokens and completion tokens — and the panel shows the latest tokens for the conversation. Consumption counts against your workspace AI budget; track it in Usage.
Tips for better results
Name the project or space to narrow the search — "in the API Reference space" — otherwise the assistant looks everywhere you have access.
The assistant remembers the conversation. Refine with "make it shorter" or "now add a code example" instead of re-explaining.
Generated content is a first pass, not a finished page.
Assistant vs. other AI features
| Feature | Scope | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| **Workspace assistant** | Whole workspace, conversational | Finding, summarizing, audits, cross-project drafting |
| [Writing Copilot](/ai/copilot) | The open page | Inline drafting and edits while writing |
| [AI agent](/ai/agent) | A project, scheduled | Unattended, recurring maintenance |
Governance
Admins control the assistant through the Workspace AI policy: enable or disable the Workspace assistant, set its tier, and cap spend with the monthly token budget and alerts.
